Gus first developed an interest in home building in college when he started purchasing and renovating houses. He fell in love with the satisfaction of working with his hands and the endless creative possibilities.  Even today, Gus remains an avid woodworker.

After graduating from Furman University with a business degree, he began his career as a production supervisor and later became a quality control manager for a Fortune 100 company. In 1984, Gus and Belinda started Gabriel Builders – naming the company after their oldest son.

A member since 1986, Gus has been heavily involved in the Home Builders Association on local, state and national levels. He has served on the Board of Directors, been a mentor and chairperson, and was appointed as a South Carolina HBA Task Force Member. Gus is also a member of The Premier Builder Group, a national elite group of builders known for high quality construction. Gus has been a presenter at Furman’s prestigious OLLI Program, and since 2011, he has been an annual presenter and mentor at Clemson University’s Construction Science Capstone Program.

Gus has also been inducted in the Berea High School and North Greenville University Athletic Hall of Fame for basketball.

 Favorite Verse & Quote:

A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”  Proverbs 22:1

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper. He should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote  poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all hosts of heaven and earth pause to say; ‘Here lives a great sweeper who did his job well.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
