The Cliffs at Walnut Cove custom home on the golf course

Hydrangea Hideaway

For many of those who travel, seeing a New-England homestead evokes a sense of family and simplicity; a by-gone era of white clapboard homes that has been replaced by technology and convenience. One would rarely use this word to describe a newly built home, however, it is the perfect descriptor for this traditional design. From initiation, the owners had specific needs for their home and finding the perfect lot to achieve their goals led to the exploration of numerous homesites. Pre-requisites included the need for golf course frontage and a community with a rural feel and active community farm.  Ultimately, the Cliffs at Walnut Cove near Asheville, North Carolina was chosen for the project.

Upon approach, split rail fences, a paver drive, and intricately laid boulder walls serve as a prelude to the architectural details. Covered porches with classical columns and trim-work overlook the nearby community farmland. Traditional materials were selected it compliment the architecture. The roofline is kept historically simple and is clad with copper and a DaVinci roof, which gives the appearance of aged slate.  Rows of double-hung and French doors are flanked by functional handmade shutters. Arrival to the home is punctuated by passing under a covered breezeway, which leads to a secondary structure; an elegant carriage home that serves as a fully appointed residence for 8 guests. Once within the motor-court, the three-car garage and copper lanterns complete your arrival.

On the outside, the high level of detail works tirelessly to keep the size of the home at bay. However, upon stepping into the foyer, this impression is overridden. An oversize great hall overlooking the golf course serves as the living, dining and music rooms. Despite the size of the room, a twelve foot coffered ceiling and fireplace provide a sense of coziness and keep the scale of the room appropriate.  Though an open plan, the kitchen with its large island, contains ample cabinets and a banquette for more intimate dining. Handmade cabinets by Nicholas James Fine Woodworking provide modern convenience with expert workmanship and finishing. The kitchen, bearing the heavy-lifting of the home, is supported by a large pantry, home-support office and mud room. There is even a dedicated pet feeding station!

The master suite is comprised of a home-office, sleeping area with fireplace, dual large closets and a spectacular bath! A soaking tub and generous vanities are highlighted by luxurious lighting and tile work. The second floor provides numerous functional and entertainment spaces. A professional gym and spa area support a health-conscious lifestyle. Meanwhile, the adjacent media room and second floor balcony provide expansive views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and golf course.

Quality workmanship and fine materials are omnipresent within this home. The design, interior details, and programmatic planning support the specialized needs of the owners. Their extended careers and philanthropic work pair with day-to-day living to constantly utilize the features of the home. It will be a generational home, time-less and resistant to trends; like its northern counterparts.
