Top Pet-Friendly Considerations for the Home

When it comes to the comfort of our furry friends, we often go the extra mile. A recent study has found that pets, dogs in particular, play a huge role in home sales. The 2017 Animal House: Remodeling Impact report, conducted by the National Association of Realtors, has proved that pets are definitely a part of the family. The numbers show that when home owners are looking to relocate, renovate, or build their pets are a huge consideration. A lot of people even base their home decisions on what will be best for their furry companions.

In 2016, 61 percent of U.S. households either have a pet or plan to get one in the future, so it is important to understand the unique needs and wants of animal owners when it comes to home ownership.

81% of the people surveyed said that they had animal-related considerations to keep in mind when deciding on their next living situation. 99% of the pet owners surveyed said that their pets were a part of their family. That being said, they were all willing to make sacrifices in order to accommodate their furry friends. The most common changes made for pets included building a fence, adding a dog door, and installing laminate flooring.

Over half of the survey respondents said that they took on a renovation to fit the needs of their pet. 94% of those that did renovations said they were satisfied with how they turned out. Most pet owners said that they have a greater desire to spend time at home and enjoy it more since the completion of pet-related renovations.

Of course, the members of the National Association of Realtors had to get in on the action. 80% of the members surveyed claimed to be animal lovers. Furthermore, most of them said that they had pets of their own and 12% said they volunteer for an organization that helps animals. Around 20% said that they plan to volunteer in the future.
