Carolina Courses: The Gabriel Team’s Favorite Golf Spots

Carolina Courses: The Gabriel Team’s Favorite Golf Spots

The Carolinas are home to some of the most beautiful golf courses. From the coast, to the lake and on to the mountains, it’s hard to choose which one is our favorite. But, we do have a few that have stuck out over the years. So, with golf season in full swing (pun intended 😉), we thought we would share some of our local favorites. From playing a round with clients to spending a sunny Saturday on the driving range, this sport is one of our favorite pastimes. So, we asked some of our in-house golf fanatics what their favorite local courses were and why:

The Cliffs at Mountain Park

The Mountain Park golf course ranked number one within our office (probably because we get to enjoy it’s gorgeous view every day). Our office and showroom, located in the Village at Mountain Park, overlooks the course and it’s beautiful scenery. This course is the latest edition to the Cliffs Communities and is home to a Gary Player Signature design. As a links-style course, the cart paths are hidden to put the beauty of nature on display. With mountain views all around and the North Saluda River running alongside, this course is breathtaking from all angles. John Biggs, our Residential Designer and Drafter,  just moved to the area and is currently living in Hendersonville, but he is anxious to step foot onto this Cliffs course.

I haven’t played in this area yet…but from what I can see here at Mountain Park, the course is well-maintained and in great condition. Food at the barn is excellent and they change the menu up so there’s always something new. Based on what I have read, Mountain Park is a fun and challenging layout with some risk/reward holes, which always adds excitement to the round.

In addition, Nick Rubio, our Quality Control Manager, had some great things to say about this breathtaking mountain location:

Nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this Gary Player track is a mix of fun and challenge. Having played just about every course in the area, I can honestly say that this one stands out from the crowd. With an exciting four hole finish, 14 holes on the Saluda River, and a true links style, Mountain Park is my number one course.

Pebble Creek Country Club

Gabe Rubio, our Project and Construction Manager, has a fond place in his heart for the sport after growing up on Pebble Creek’s golf course:

I spent the first 8 years of my life growing up less than 100’ away from holes #10 and #12 on the Creekside course at Pebble Creek in Taylors, SC.  I will always remember the long walks that my mom would take me on as a 3-year-old.  Unfortunately, it would be 16 years later before I started playing golf.  In the early 90’s, 18 additional holes were created for the Members and so Creekside was divided into the current tract. Every once in a while, I get the nostalgic opportunity to play “The Original 18” holes which includes #1-4 & #14-18 from Linkside (the Member’s course) and then #1-9 from Creekside.

A rumored Donald Ross design, Carolina Country Club makes you feel like you’re playing golf the way it was intended. For the most part, inviting tee shots give you a bit of hope as you make your approach into the numerous crowned green complexes that Donald Ross is known for. I’ve never played a course of his that I didn’t like and it’s nice to have this gem so close to home. – Nick Rubio

The Cliffs at Walnut Cove

Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a breathtaking course. This Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course opened in 2005, and is the only championship golf course to have debuted with a PGA tour event. As the prior home to farmland fields, the course coincides with woodland landscape and beautiful, scenic mountain streams that weave in and out of the greens.

We had the privilege of playing here recently for the Walnut Cove Member Association’s Weekend of Giving Event. They hold this event every year and Gabriel Builders was blessed to have been a sponsor for this amazing cause. We sent some of our guys out to play in the tournament that was held on the Monday of that weekend. They were all too eager to take their Monday off to play golf!! Hmmm…we’re on to you boys!
